Here is a good place for some Spring fishing. The water level has dropped enough for you to do some great pocket water fishing. Use an size 16 adams or annihilator dropped with a bead head nymph and you should do pretty good.

Reports coming back to me are saying the Malad is fishing just fine. Use a good attractor with a bead head beatis for good results. You should see at certain times of the day BWO's coming off and of course plenty of midges. Keep in mind that portions of the Malad are closed after the end of March. Consult Idaho F&G regulations for the sections that may be open all year. (Malad State Park)

This is a great little river to be fishing this time of year. Great pocket water inside a deep cool canyon. Most anglers are using attractor flies such as an Adams with a bead head nymph dropper. While you are there swing by Billingsly Creek for some great evening caddis action.

The Water level is much to high to fish successfully and still a little to dangerous to wade. Wait a couple of weeks.

The water is pretty good right now. Things could change with all the rain we've been having but still worth the driver to get there. This is dry fly dropper water and you should probably start with a size 16 Parachute Adams or BWO dropped with a Bead Head Baetis. This is some of the best pocket water fishing you will ever experience and the fish do not have much time to spend looking at what food just floated by. Have a good supply of Dry Shake Floatant with you and keep you dry fly dry as much as possible. High and dry is the rule on this river!

The Malad River will be closed to fishing April 1 up to Hwy 84 bridge. The fishing has been pretty good and is well worth the trip before it closes in tow weeks. If you can get down to the river from the Hwy 84 bridge to the river then the fishing should continue to be good until run off.

From now until it's just to cold to fish the Malad River should be on your list of rivers to fish this late Fall and early Winter. Just put on a size 16 or 18 Parachute BWO or a Parachute Adams in the same sizes and work the pocket water. The trout may be smaller than what you are used to but the top water action is what makes this little river worth fishing this time of year.

Go to the Malad! From now until the snow gets to deep you should plan a trip or two to the Malad. With lower water and a good Baetis hatch, you will see lots of action for small to medium size rainbows in pocket water and tail outs.

This river is like and Ace in the hole. When all else fails head to the Malad River. Anglers are reporting decent fishing using Adams and Parachute Hairs Ear's with bead head droppers. This is one of the best Fall fisheries and when its cold and slow head to the Malad.

What I like about this river is after the Spring run off, it's one of the best pocket water rivers in Southwest Idaho. You want to work as much big water all Spring and Summer and then when Fall comes the Malad is perfect. So keep hammering those local rivers and streams and book the Malad when those blue ribbon trout streams are snowed in or closed and mark your calendar for the Malad.

The Malad is still fishing good. The fish are a little smaller than probably what your used to but they fight hard and plentiful.

The Malad River is Hot. Check the weather and stay away if thunder storms are predicted but aside from that this river is fishing incredibly well. This is pocket water fishing and you should be using and attractor flies ( annihilator, Adams or other small type attractors ) or small hoppers with bead head droppers such as a Pheasant Tail or Hare's Ear. Work the quick pockets and tail outs.

This little jewel almost always is a good bet. This one you should stash away for the fall when everything else is closed or slow.

The water level is down and the river has cleared up. This is great pocket water action and if you don't mind the walk down the canyon you will be in for a pleasant day of fishing. This is attractor fly water so have a good assortment.
The Malad River upstream from Hwy. 84 is open year round and some brave cold weather fishermen have done well there. Unlike the lower section from the confluence upstream to the Hwy. this section get very little notice in most fly fishing circles. However, If you have a bad case of cabin fever this place may cure your ills. I would recommend you go there in a hunting or prospecting frame of mind.
Sometimes when going to places you have never been this is the best approach. Oster Lakes and Riley Creek is another area worth looking at this time of year. Oster Lakes just opened and the fishing has been pretty good for large trout. If you're going to Oster Lakes you might as well look into stopping by Riley Creek not far from there. If you like hunting trout then this creek might be your ticket. Riley Creek is open year round above the fish hatchery.
