Boise River (in town)

Boise River (Town)

BLOWN OUT! Dont even try.

April 5, 2011

You are looking at 6000 csf and that's not going to be the end of it.  You might as well ad the Boise on the list of unfishable rivers.

The river through town has been fishing really good for this time of year.  I was down there the other day and picked off a half dozen really nice rainbows the largest being around 18 inches.  I did see some beatis (BWO) duns on the water and a few midges but very few feeding trout at late afternoon.  My fish were caught on a double nymph rig set up with a bead head baetis and a bead head green caddis larva.  The river is currently at 1000 cfs and will probably continue to rise all spring.

The Boise is still running pretty high for late Summer.  However you can still pick up quite a catddis hatch in the evening when the sun goes down.  Nymphing the seams will also bring up some trout during the day.  Use a tandem nymph rig that includes a tandem of bead head nymphs with enough weight to slow you flies down.  You might see a splattering of Baetis depending on what section of river you are on.

To high to fish!

The Boise is at around 1400 cfs right now and the Fish and Game Dept. has been stocking quite regularly now.  At 1400 cfs the river requires you to add some weight to your flies in order to slow your drift and to get your flies down to where the trout are holding.  If you don't have the right weight you will fish right over these trout right now.  Use a double nymph rig and work the tailouts and pockets that you come across.  You might see some PMD's and Baetis during the day and some Caddis flies in the afternoon.  During a good hatch use the right dry fly and try dropping it with an emerger until you can see what it is the fish are taking.  Good luck!

Not much more to report on the Boise.  More Baetis and Fewer Midges have been reported, which is a good thing.  If you live in Boise or are planning to visit, this is a good time to spend outside along a trout stream.  The fishing can be good at times, but just being on the river can be enough.  Hard core Boise River anglers are having little trouble catching a few trout and there are still plenty of white fish to make your day on the river rewarding.

March 22, 2010

The Boise River is still running low and the white fish are still active in the back end of the tailouts and the slow water sections.  Where you will find trout rising to midges and some small Baetis stay there and don't move.  The trout bite has been sporadic and limited at best.  Most anglers are catching only a few here and there and they are not letting on where that's at.  Be persistent and move around a lot and you will be more successful than just wading until you catch one.  If the fishing is slow where you are, jump into your car and move to a new location.

As the days start warming up the white fishing should get even better.  Small nymphs fished weighted through the deeper runs will produce a few trout and the white fish will be stacked up just below those runs.. White fish tend to school up this time of year and if you catch one you are likely to catch a few more from the same spot.

You are going to see some Baetis action in the morning and some really good hatches in the late afternoon.  Pick your spots carefully and you will be rewarded with some good top water action.  In between hatches the trout are hitting small bead head nymphs in the likely tailouts and pockets.

The river is a little lower and the weather is colder so its basically nymphing during the day and Baetis action in the late afternoon to early evening.  If you plan on nymphing, use a tandem rigs with two bead head nymphs in the size 16 to 18 with enough lead to bounce along the bottom in the current.

Same, same.

If you are looking for some dry fly action the early evening is the time to be on the Boise River through town.  Some Caddis and PMD action can be found on some areas of the river.  Continue to fish the diversion damns and the obvious tailouts.

OK, what you want to do when the river is over 800 cfs is to concentrate on the diversion damns up and down the river.  You will have better success at these locations than you would if you were just be boppin down the river looking for fish.

Nymphing the Boise river through town seems to be the best best right now.  Try and stay away from the rafting section of the river and concentrate on the Garden City down stream area.  Fish the tail outs and ignore the flats.

The river is clear and running a summertime levels.  Fish this river when the tubers and floaters have left the river for the day or fish it before they start their trip down the river.  Look for afternoon PMD's and evening Caddis and fish these hatches hard.  During the off hours pound the river with nymphs.  Almost any nymph will work as long as you have enough lead to move the bugs along the bottom to where the Trout are laying.
