Blackfoot River

Blackfoot River Report

June 20, 2010

The Black is still running to high to fish on a consistent level.  Wait another week or two before working the river hard for fish.

June 1, 2010

The water level is starting to rise and the run off is fast approaching.  If you are up in this area the Lower Blackfoot River might not be a bad choise.  Nymphing will get you on the fish.  Look for Baetis, Midges and some PMD's in the late morning.

The Upper Blackfoot is still producing quality fishing with Beatis on the main menu.  Have your nymph rod ready because the tailouts are still producing good fish on nymphs.  Well worth the drive to get there.

Cooler weather will change things on the Blackfoot.  Nymph fishing with tandem bead head nymphs is still the best way to fish many of the sections, however the Baetis action is picking up and you may still see some Caddis in the evenings.

Same as last week!

Little has changed on the Blackfoot river.  There are a lot of great rivers in Eastern Idaho which should be your destination.  Leave the Blackfoot for the side trip or stop by on the way home.

Keep your eyes open for some Caddis action.  During the day you want to work the tailouts and runs with weighted nymphs.  It's summer time slow and the water is warming up but there are plenty of Hoppers and other terrestrials to keep the top water action going.

In the heat of summer you first want to go to a nymphing system on the Blackfoot.  Later it's best to fish with a good Hopper imitation or go to a Madam X.  You may have a decent Caddis hatch in the early evening so be sure to be on or near the river in the late to early evening.

The Blackfoot river is in the dog day's of Summer.  Best fished nymphing the quicker water and tailouts.  Try using and attractor fly such as a Annihilator or stimulator with a bead head dropper that will imitate a Mayfly or Caddis Fly;  This is also the time of year to be ready for Hopper and terrestrial fishing.  Work the banks and inside slides but work fast.
